In New York Times, Ross Douthat (November 7, 2015) article; “The Dying of the Whites”, asserts that in the twenty-century the death rate of middle-aged white folks is increasing due to the abuse of drugs, alcohol, and suicide. Douthat uses repetition to catch the reader's eye and to emphasise on the causes of death rates, that have changed over the century. Douthat developes this article to show the public that things have changed over the last years and not only that but the causes of death have increased over the population of the whites. Douthat states that white folks want to have a purpose, and a sense of belonging and in this times that has been taken away from them.
Douthat wants to inform the public of the situation that has been increasing over the last century. Death has increased among the whites and the reasons Douthat states in his article are supported with facts. Ross Douthat gains credibility by giving information on a topic that most people wouldn't think is happening in the U.S. His intentions are to inform the public of the situation happening and how the death rates are not lowering, but are gradually increasing over the years. After reading this article I have realised that death will come some way or another, but no one should die in drug overdose or suicide.
